Grand Canyon... twice!

Let's be real for a minute.  Can you really visit the Grand Canyon, one of the 7 Wonders of the World, and just look at it from the edge, behind a chain link fence?  Well, that's pretty much what you do when you take 2 kids in the middle of February.  We tried going down one of the trails and stopped when it was so iced over that even hikers with poles were turning back.  But since we bought a YEAR pass to ALL of the National Parks, we knew we'd be back...

Just a month later, that is... the day after my birthday, just the two of us trecked back and set out to hike to the bottom and back in one day.

which we did- 7 miles down and 9.5 miles up.  now that's fun.

What a contrast in temperature and scenery.  We started at 8:45 am with jackets and hats, then got to the Colorado River at the bottom around 12, wishing we had swim suits.  It was at least 20 degrees hotter and so amazing to be looking up at the canyon around us.  We took 2-hours to hang out, then hiked up.

Spring time in the canyon is gorgeous and the weather is perfect.  We made it out just before dark.  We were a little tired... and a lot hungry.  Is it normal for 2 people to eat a whole pizza?  And DQ blizzards?  It was quite a day- ended by a 4-hour drive home (because I didn't want to camp again in 25 degree weather and neither of us wanted to pay for a hotel!)

The trip was made possible only because Sandy came out to babysit the kiddos.

And they loved every minute of it.  Almost as much as we did.
