Birthday celebration for an old man

On August 23, Will celebrated his 31st birthday.   Yes, he is old.  He woke up the other day and realized he was all grown up.  I'm still in denial, but my wrinkles and thinning hair are starting to convince me otherwise.  Will's parents and sister were still in town, so we celebrated with the usual free meal at Joe's, then went home for homemade carrot cake.  Don't ask me for the recipe- it's too good and I'll never make it again because it called for 1 cup of oil.  You can only eat/make that kind of stuff for birthdays...  Anyway...

celebrating...

still celebrating...

smoke alarm going off

After Will opened his running clothes (once you get into marathons or triathlons, say good-bye to normal presents cause whether you need it or not, you will get exercise gear), Grant opened his present that he picked out for himself.  I generously gave him $2 for a few birthday gifts for DAD at the Dollar Store.  Grant picked out Tootsie Pops for Will (they are Grant's favorite :) and then a sparkly pink pony caught his eye and he had to have it.  He said, "We can wrap this and Dad will give it to me for his birthday."  That pink pony has been the treasured toy of every boy who has come to play.  It's magical.

That weekend we had Dorothy stay with the boys while we went on our own weekend get-away.  This was such a fun and incredibly CHEAP vacation.  The night before, I bid on a resort online and for $60, I got the Hyatt Scottsdale Resort with 15 pools (or something like that) and really nice rooms.  We at dinner, using Will's Birthday coupons you get when you sign up for Brio's fan club- that was a $40 meal for $4 (but we did leave a good tip...)  The next morning, we hiked/ran Camelback, which was conveniently 10 minutes away.  That was free, of course.  We wanted breakfast afterward, but forgot our wallets, so we gathered up all the change in the car and shared a bagel and a few bananas for around $2.  I should write a book called "The Royal Cheapskate."

So fun to hike without kids!!

Dorothy brought the kiddos to play with us later that morning.  We had a blast!
And poor Dorothy was watching us the whole time in the 115 degree heat!  What are the odds that she would come and visit us during our record hottest week of the summer?

Is it just me or does Owen's head look as big as Dorothy's?

Fun, fun week...  Grandma Dorothy is amazing with the boys and can fix ANYTHING in the house.  We owe her big time for all the help- in the dead of summer, too!  What a trooper.

Utah for Sandy's wedding!

It seems that every year, whether or not we plan to, we end up in Utah for a short visit.  This time it was for Sandy's wedding on August 18th.  She and Dorothy "stopped by" AZ to pick up Grant on their way to UT, which meant that Will and I could road trip a few days later with just Owen.  We piled in the mini (yes, everything fit) and drove all night.  It was very much like the time we went from Seattle to SLC when Grant was the exact same age.  Are we lucky to get 2 babies who sleep for 10-12 hour drives??  Owen was a champ...and so was Will as he snoozed through most of the drive there.  Of course, one of our first "must see" places was Temple Square!  We attempted to get the same picture we did 3 years ago...

But instead we got this one... me yelling at Grant to smile, or else and Will trying to tickle/ bribe him.  The picture that followed that one was of Owen screaming because Grant just landed on his head after Will tried to throw him in the air in hopes of getting a happier, more cooperative boy.

We also had to enjoy the cooler weather by hiking a popular spot- Rock Canyon... brought back my days of climbing when I lived in Provo.  Please excuse Owen's crazy eyebrows in these pictures.  It was impossible to get him to look at the camera, let alone smile.

Ok.  Owen's severely concerned look is for a good reason.  He has since gotten used to Grant's "hugs."

Before we left, Grant spotted some hikers that were, umm, walking their bird?

Aahh... cousin time.  This was the highlight of Grant's trip, besides the cookies and ice cream at Sandy's wedding.  He LOVED playing with Celia and telling her what to do.

This was Grant's expression when we came out of the temple, after Sandy and Michael were sealed.  He was very MAD that he could not go in to see Sandy get married.  So hard to explain it to a 3 year old!

And this is where we found Owen, of course.  Aunt Linda practically ran out of the temple to meet him for the first time.

The happy couple!

He was still mad...

Another story that makes headline news... Jenni's got a boyfriend, pizza, pizza daddy-o... AND that boyfriend had a little talk with Papa Bill on the day of Sandy's wedding!  Awesome.  Yes, Bill and Dorothy will have one more daughter getting married and we will have one more road trip to Utah.

More playtime at Kirk and Shannon's after the wedding...

We took a long break in Kanab on the way back to AZ.  It was well worth it.

Thanks for getting married, Sandy!  Jenni, you're lucky we like you so much, otherwise we would not repeat all this fun RIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS.  You crazy girl.

2 months already!!

My blogging, or lack thereof, is a direct reflection of how busy I am these days.   But I have to give a brief
update on Mr. Owen.  He started smiling around 5 weeks and has the most adorable dimple to show off.  He continues to get chubbier every day, just like Grant was.  At his 2 month check-up, Owen was pretty much off the growth charts at 16 lbs, 3 oz and 25 inches long.  I guess he's the size of a 6 month old, but I already knew that.  Here's a few pics we've taken over the past few weeks.  Some are from out Utah trip and I will post about that soon...
